Spaces against Gender Based Violence
BREAKTHROUGH | Together with Breakthrough Trust, Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung has been creating spaces called From-Youth-for-Youth that target groups from differing class- and educational backgrounds. Young people can address experiences of gender-based and sexualised violence and can create solutions and strategies to address these problems together. The aim is to enable young adults to act as agents of change towards a safe society for all genders.
One of such spaces was created through a 22-day youth leadership program in which participating youths could learn about the usage of pop cultural methods as a means to address sensitive topics such as gender-based and sexual violence and to bring about lasting change in gender behaviors. The program consisted of several workshops including a theatre workshop and a film development workshop, where the participants would learn how to create their own movies around the topic of gender-based violence.
Parallel to the university student-oriented youth leadership program Breakthrough trust and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung conducted a 10-days theatre workshop in Sangam Vihar with young adults who have no or little formal education. Through the method of interactive forum theatre, the participants were sensitized for issues connected to gender justice and learned strategies to address these problems so that they can act as multipliers in the future.
The results from all the workshops, including the ten movies that resulted from the film creation workshops where presented at an all-day youth enclave with 300 participants. The conclave also gave room to share stories of sexualised- and gender-based violence.
The Delhi-based Breakthrough Trust works to make violence and discrimination against women and girls unacceptable by transforming the underlying cultural norms that perpetuate these practices. Breakthrough is building a critical mass of change agents worldwide to deliver irreversible impact on the issues of our time.
