Training to Workers' Activists

Workers are often divided by their different modes of employment. However, the underlying causes for the problems they are facing are largely the same. A project with the Centre for Workers’ Management (CWM) focused on the commonalities of workers from different backgrounds and facilitated exchange and mutual support.  The project has been concluded in December 2015.

By bringing together grassroots activists from various sectors in trainings and skill-sharing workshops, RLS and CWM provided spaces to discuss and explore how to implement sector-specific methods of organisation in other branches of the economy. Besides such exchange on a national level, CWM also initiated transnational exchange between workers’ associations from different countries.

For example in 2014, activists from Japan, South Africa, France, USA, and India came together to discuss the peril of greater flexibility of the labour market in an international conference on precarious work in Mumbai. This not only improved the activists’ practical political skills and bargaining power, but also strengthened cooperation between associations on the national level and increased practical solidarity between workers from all over the world.

Our Partner

The Centre for Workers’ Management, established in 1991 in Delhi, supports workers’ organisations on the company level. Through trainings and educational campaigns, they inform workers about political self-organising, alliance building and political communication. Moreover, they conduct research on topics like labour migration, discrimination at the workplace and the growing inequality in India.
